French President Nicolas Sarkozy delivers a speech during a national ceremony in honour of the country's last veteran of the Great War, Lazare Ponticelli, who died on March 12, 2008 aged 110, at the Invalides in Paris on March 17, 2008. The president laid a wreath in honour of the war's 8.5 million "poilus," the affectionate term given to French foot soldiers since Napoleonic times that became particularly associated with World War I.
