ICOAST-ENVIRONMENT-BAGS-JOBS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY IN FRENCH BY CHRISTOPHE KOFFI
Recent picture showing women, nicknamed "manan-féréla," collecting on March 4, 2008 plastic bags in Abidjan. Spending the whole day with their feet and hands in waste water, thousands spend their day washing used plastic bags, treating two tons a day, which will be recycled to make plastic objects "made in Ivory Coast." They may be the scourge of cityscapes and the countryside and the bane of environmentalists, but discarded bags have spawned a growing and lucrative cottage industry in Ivory Coast.
