SCIENCE-AUSTRALIA-ASTEROIDS
(FILER) Photo dated 18 September 2001 shows star trails around the south celestial pole above the Anglo-Australian Siding Spring Observatory in the Warrumbungle National Park which is being used to search the universe for around 1,000 giant asteroids that could be headed for Earth. Two Australian astronomers recruited by the US space agency NASA have already found three new asteroids in the first week of the project using the refurbished 1950 telescope at Siding Spring - the only NASA-sponsored probe to have a clear view of the southern sky.
