KENYA-DEMO-POLICE-HUMANRIGHTS

Kenyan police officers lobbed teargas at residents of a Nairobi slum suburb, Kayole on April 3, 2008 during a crackdown on suspects members of an outlawed sect, 'Mungiki' following an attack on police officers by some residents from the area suspected to harbor a large number of the sect's membership. Police officers patrolling the area were pelted with stones during a brief skirmish with suspected 'Mungiki' who accuse the police force of harassment and brutality before a police operation to flush out the offenders was quickly organised leading to the arrest of scores of suspects. The Kenya Police came into international spotlight last year for their methods of cracking down on the notorious 'Mungiki' which included alleged summary executions of arrested suspects whose bodies, witnesses say, were abandoned in a forest at the Kenyan Rift Valley.
