BRAZIL-NATIVES-LAND-AMAZON
(FILE) Aerial picture of the Amazon rain forest taken on February 19, 2005 over the Xingu river basin, 140 km from Anapu, in the northern Brazilian state of Para. Police is preparing on April 7, 2008 to force as many as several hundred landowners out of 17,000 square kilometres near the borders with Venezuela and Guyana which comprises the Raposa Serra do Sol Reserve in Brazil's northeastern Roraima state, while white landowners are vowing to resist "with our blood" an eviction operation against them to enforce a large reserve for an indigenous population. Some 14,000 Brazilians of native Indian descent live in the zone, which was formally allocated to them by the government in 2005 after a 30-year legal battle. Authorities have given non-indigenous people in the region until the end of April to vacate the land, after which a 500-strong police force will be sent in to make them comply.
