TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY DARIO THUBURN
Larisa An, 48, (C), the owner of Ginza, a popular Korean restaurant in Baikonur tastes spicy Korean specialities in the kitchen of her restaurant on April 7, 2008. When Yi So-Yeon blasts off on from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on April 8, to become South Korea's first astronaut, she will not by any means be the first Korean in this remote ex-Soviet region. Thousands of ethnic Koreans were exiled to the arid plains of Central Asia by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1930s before the Baikonur cosmodrome -- scene of the Soviet Union's space glories -- was even planned here. Baikonur only became the hub of the Soviet space programme in the 1950s but soon became a vital source of work for local people. AFP PHOTO/ ALEXANDER NEMENOV
