IRELAND-POLITICS
Irish deputy premier Brian Cowen (R) is applauded as he walks to a bench to pose for the media after a special meeting of the Fianna Fail party, in Dublin, on April 9, 2008. Brian Cowen was chosen by the ruling Fianna Fail party on Wednesday to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Bertie Ahern as party leader, officials said. Cowen, 48, is also set to take over from Ahern as Taoiseach, or prime minister. Ahern, one of Europe's longest serving leaders, made the surprise announcement this month that he was resigning after 11 years in office amid an investigation into alleged financial wrongdoing.
