Joey Rosco, a 38 year-old father of five shows the scar from the removal of one of his kidney as he sits outside his house in the shanty town of Baseco in Manila on March 25, 2008. For the poor, unemployed denizens of the garbage-strewn community informally known as Baseco, the 13-inch scimitar-shaped scars running diagonally down their sides are the only mementoes they had after selling one of their kidneys. Selling kidneys and other human organs is illegal according to guidelines on organ transplants issued by the health department in 2002, with hospitals assisting in the trafficking liable to having their licences cancelled among other sanctions.
