THAILAND-MYAMAR-US-SHIPS

This US Navy handout photo shows a Marine MH-53 helicopter, assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 (HMM-265), as it takes off on May 8, 2008 from the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) in the Gulf of Thailand. Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed US expeditionary strike group and is participating in Cobra Gold 2008, a joint military exercise sponsored by the United States and Thailand designed to enhance interoperability between joint US forces and the combined forces of the Thai, Singaporean, Japanese and Indonesian militaries. The White House announced on May 6, that it was offering three million dollars more in aid to the secretive and impoverished country, on top of an initial emergency allocation of 250,000 dollars. It also said that it was prepared to send four US Navy ships, including USS Essex, laden with emergency relief supplies like blankets and water purification tablets, to Myanmar.
