FRANCE-POLITICS-ENVIRONMENT-BIOTECH
(LtoR) - French socialist deputy Philippe Martin, communist deputy Andre Chassaigne and Ecologist deputy Noel Mamere give a press conference on May 14, 2008 in Paris, one day after French lawmakers threw out a controversial bill on genetically-modified (GM) crops. Although Sarkozy's ruling right holds an absolute majority in the National Assembly, only one third of his UMP party turned out to support the text, which was voted out by left-wing lawmakers on technical grounds by a whisker-thin 136 votes to 135.
