NORWAY-ABEL-PRIZE-ROYALS-LAUREATES
The 2008 laureates of the Abel Prize, the world's leading mathematics award -- Jacques Tits (2nd L) of France and John Griggs Thompson (3rd L) of the United States, pose with Norwegian King Harald V (2nd R) and Queen Sonja (L) on May 20 at the Royal Palace in Oslo. At right is Marie-Jeanne Tits. Tits and Griggs Thompson won the prize for their pioneer work on algebra.
