FRANCE-ZAIRE-KOLWEZI-ANNIVERSARY
French President Nicolas Sarkozy (C) flanked by French Defence Minister Herve Morin (4th L) attends a ceremony marking the thrirty anniversary of the "Operation Leopard" in Kolwezi (Zaire), on May 21, 2008, at the Invalides National Hostel in Paris. On May 19, 1978, 600 French paratroopers of the French 2e REP (2nd Foreign Legion Parachute Regiment) were dropped of on the mining town of Kolwezi, southern Zaire's Shaba Province, to restore order as fierce fightings occurred between zairese troops and Angola-based separatist rebels. 250 rebels, 500 Zairians, 120 European hostages and 6 paratroopers died.
