TO GO WITH AFP STORY IN FRENCH : 'DESENSABLEMENT DU MT-ST-MICHEL: LE MAIRE LANCE UN APPEL A NICOLAS SARKOZY' - Mont Saint Michel Mayor Eric Vannier poses on May 22, 2008 on this historical site's fortification. The Mont Saint-Michel, western France, celebrated its 1300 year anniversary last May 1st. The Mont and its bay were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979, for its cultural, historical, and architectural significance. On 16 June 2006, public authorities announced a €164 million project to build a hydraulic dam that will help remove the accumulated silt and make Mont Saint-Michel an island again, expected to be completed by 2012. On May 22, 2008, Vannier appealed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy to ask a revision of the project and its financial reevaluation.
