COLOMBIA-FARC-MARULANDA-SANTOS
Colombian Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos speaks during a press conference in Bogota, on May 25, 2008 announcing the death of Pedro Antonio Marin a.k.a "Manuel Marulanda" or "Tirofijo" (Sureshot), the top leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), at the Colombian Defense Ministry building. According to military intelligence services, Santos confirmed that Marulanda died on heart attack on March 26 at 6:30pm, and that his replacement as FARC leader will be Alfonso Cano, seen as the group's ideological leader. The conference came just minutes after Colombian network Caracol aired a video released by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), in which Timoleon Jimenez alias "Timochenko", member of the rebel group's secretariat, confirmed the death.
