Australia's former prime minister John Howard defended June 2, 2008 his decision to send troops into Iraq as the new centre-left government honoured an election pledge to pull them out on June 1. Australia's 550-strong combat force began leaving its base at Tallil on June 1, 2008 some 300 kilometres (1,875 miles) south of Baghdad.
