INDIA-LIFESTYLE-ECONOMY-WINE
TO GO WITH AFP STORY 'Lifestyle-India-economy-wine' BY Tripti LAHIRI
In this picture taken on May 9, 2008, bartenders pour wine into glasses at a wine tasting event organised by a hotel in New Delhi. Lakshmi Chand, one of the more curious at a small gathering to learn about wine -- increasingly a marker of hipness and class in India -- took a thoughtful sip of the ruby liquid in her glass. "Doesn't it go dead on your palate?" asked the 29-year-old with cropped hair, as the 20-odd people sniffed and sipped on a sultry evening in New Delhi. Foreign wine-makers may gnash their teeth but there is little they can do as a boom in wine-drinking in India passes them by. In spite of a slash in import duties last summer, a complicated web of levies, taxes and exorbitant mark-ups continues to put foreign wines out of the reach of all but the most profligate.
