US-ART-NEANDERTHAL-PAINTING

Ken Waitrek (L), Eric Richmond (2nd L), Mike Nigro (2nd R) and Sam Seawright (R) install Charles R. Knight’s giant mural “The Flint Workers of the River Vezere,” from 1920, on view to the public for the first time in over forty years on June 18, 2008 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The restored painting of a Neanderthal family shows a scene at Le Moustier cave in southern France where bones of Neanderthal man and stone artifacts were found in 1909. It was one of the first attempts to depict early human ancestors in a realistic setting and was painted for the Natural History Museum's Hall of the Age of Man opened in the 1920's and closed in 1966.
