US-POLITICS-MEDAL OF FREEDOM
US President George W. Bush soeaks to invitees before presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom on June 19, 2008 during ceremonies at the White House in Washington, DC. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, recognizes exceptional meritorious service. This year's recipients were: Benjamin Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon and director of pediatric surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases; retired Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Edna Shalala; Laurence Silberman, senior judge of the US Courts of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and co-chairman of the Iraq Intelligence Commission; and posthumously to former Rep.
