SPAIN-PP-MEETING
Spanish conservative opposition Popular Party leader Mariano Rajoy gestures on June 21, 2008 during the XVI National meeting in Valencia, eastern Spain. Rajoy aimed to heal the divisions in his Popular Party at a national convention that began on June 20, nearly four months after it suffered its second successive election defeat. Rajoy is the only candidate to head the party at its three-day gathering in the Mediterranean port of Valencia, despite the open rebellion he has faced from some quarters since its loss to Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's Socialist Party on March 9. Over 3,000 delegates representing some 700,000 party members are eligible to vote when Rajoy's re-election bid is put to the test, today, on the second day of the congress. AFP PHOTO/ DIEGO TUSON
