US-JUSTICE-ENVIRONMENT-NAVY SONAR
This January 26, 2008 US Navy handout image shows Boatswain's Mate Seaman Alden Fenton discussing some of the training he has received to help him spot and identify marine mammals with a journalist from CNN, while standing watch aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG 92) during training in the Pacific Ocean. Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) The Honorable Dr. Donald Winter visited Momsen with members of the press to observe steps being taken to mitigate the impact of sonar on marine mammals. The US Supreme Court agreed June 23, 2008 to examine President George W. Bush's right to exempt the navy from environmental laws against the use of sonars considered potentially harmful to whales. The navy and environmentalists have dueled in federal court for years over the use of sonar equipment during training exercises off the California coast. Environmentalists argue that the use of sonars has potentially catastrophic consequences for marine life, arguing that their use has disoriented animals and caused mass deaths in the Bahamas and Canary islands.
