ITALY-CRIME-CASALESI
Italian carabinieri escort to jail Angelo Bocchino (R), covering his face, one of 23 Casalesi clan on July 1, 2008, in Caserta. On June 19, 2008, the Italian Justice sentences and the 36 defendants, all linked to the Casalesi clan, including its alleged head, Francesco "Sandokan" Schiavone, were appealing prison sentences handed down in late 2005 after the biggest trial in Italian history, the so-called "Spartacus" trial. The cruelty of the Casalesi and their economic and political power were exposed in a book, "Gomorra" by Roberto Saviano, a film version of which was Grand Prize runner-up at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
