ITALY-CRIME-CASALESI
This combination of pictures relasead by Italian carabinieri shows the 23 members of Casalesi clan arrested in Caserta on July1, 2008. On June 19, 2008, the Italian Justice sentences and the 36 defendants, all linked to the Casalesi clan, including its alleged head, Francesco "Sandokan" Schiavone, were appealing prison sentences handed down in late 2005 after the biggest trial in Italian history, the so-called "Spartacus" trial. The cruelty of the Casalesi and their economic and political power were exposed in a book, "Gomorra" by Roberto Saviano, a film version of which was Grand Prize runner-up at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
