LEBANON-DIPLOMACY-SYRIA
Lebanese President Michel Sleiman (L) read a letter from his Syrian counterpart delivered to him by Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Muallem (R) at the presidential palace in Baabda, east of Beirut on July 21, 2008. Muallem visited Beirut today on a trip set to usher in a new page in relations but a number of thorny issues must be tackled before full diplomatic ties are established. Muallem delivered an invitation to Lebanese President Michel Sleiman from his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad to visit Damascus, a trip the Lebanese press said would take place within a week or 10 days.
