US swimmer Michael Phelps won the Olympic Games men's 100m butterfly gold medal in an Olympic record time of 50.58. The victory gave him a seventh gold medal here and equalled Mark Spitz's 1972 record. Milorad Cavic of Serbia was second and Andrew Lauterstein of Australia was third.
