Chinese military personnel step out of their vehicle and walk beside it trying to make its way through a quagmire of muddy road on the outskirts of the town of Kangding in the Tibetan autonomous Garze Prefecture on August 23, 2008, in southwest China's Sichuan province. The Tibetan automonous region in Sichuan which borders Tibet was the scene of massive unrest in March this year and remains under an omnipresent police and military presence with constant police vehicle patrols along the streets while armed military guards man the exits of prefecture towns in the foothills of the Himalayas.
