British author Jeffrey Archer appears at Oxford College, to mark the 50th anniversary celebrations for Roger Bannisters- four minute mile record 06 May 2004. Fifty years ago a tall English medical student thrust back his head and charged for the finishing line traced on a cinder running track in Oxford. There was an anxious wait before the announcer began to speak. The time, he said, for Roger Bannister-s mile run was three minutes and... No one heard the rest, for 25-year-old Bannister had just broken the barrier that many people thought might never be breached. His time of 3min 59.4sec at the Iffley Road stadium was a remarkable milestone in human endeavour. AFP PHOTO CARL DE SOUZA
