A vendor selling prayer beads in a market in central Baghdad sits deep in his stand as Muslim Iraqis prepare for the holy month or Ramadan, due to start next week on August 30, 2008. During Ramadan, which starts on September 1, observant Muslims eat a light pre-dawn meal and fast until sunset, a practice aimed at fostering self-discipline, sacrifice and empathy for the poor.
