(FILES) -- A picture dated 07 January 2006 shows former Syrian vice president turned opposition leader Abdul Halim Khaddam at his French residence in Paris. A military court in Damascus has sentenced the former Syrian vice president Abdel Halim Khaddam to hard labour for life, his lawyer told AFP on August 30, 2008. Khaddam, who resigned as Syria's vice president in 2005 to join the opposition, is accused of "slandering the Syrian leadership and lying before an international tribunal regarding the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri," according to the charge sheet obtained by AFP.
