FILES-IRAQ-US-UNREST-QAEDA
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY BENJAMIN MORGAN
(FILES) -- File picture dated January 28, 2009 shows members of the anti al-Qaeda "Awakening" movement, also known as Concerned Local Citizens (CLC), heading to their position as they join US soldiers from Alpha Company 1-15 3rd ID during an operation hunting Al-Qaeda militants in a village near Salman Pak, on the outskirts of south Baghdad. Counter-offensives by the US-backed Iraqi military have crippled the Al-Qaeda network in Iraq but the deadly jihadist group is still far from being wiped out, military and government officials say. Iraqi and US counter-offensives, including covert operations relying heavily on help from pro-US Sunni groups, have cleared much of Al-Qaeda from its strongholds in Anbar and Diyala provinces.
