GERMANY-EAST-HISTORY-PALAST DER REPUBLIK
The tower of Berlin's town hall (the Rote Rathaus) is framed by two remaining concrete pillars of the former east German parliament building (Palast der Republik) September 11, 2008. Badly damaged during the second World War, levelled by the then communist east German government in 1950, the Royal Palace originally built in the late 17th century, gave way to east Germany's parliament building, the Palast der Republik, which is currently being dismantled. Controversy is raging over the planned reconstruction of the Royal Palace, which many say will be too costly for bankrupt Berlin. AFP PHOTO JOHN MACDOUGALL
