German Bert Grabsch gets ready prior to the start of the time trial elite men at the 2008 UCI road world championships on September 25, 2008, in Varese. Grabsch clocked an average speed of more than 50kph over the 43.7km course to hand Germany its first time trial title since Jan Ullrich won in Lisbon in 2001. The German finished 42 seconds ahead of 31-year-old Canadian Svein Tuft, with David Zabriskie of the United States taking third ahead of pre-race favourite and compatriot Levi Leipheimer, who was 1min 05sec off the pace.
