SYRIA-DEFENCE MINISTER

Tlass retired 12 May 2004 as defence minister at the age of 72 after 32 years in the post, a source close to the Syrian government said. The veteran Syrian general, who took office two years after the 1970 coup which brought Hafez al-Assad to power, in which he played a key role, will continue to serve on the ruling Baath party-s command council, the source said.
