(FILES) -- This handout picture released by the official Syrian News Agency (SANA) shows President Bashar al-Assad (C), Defence Minister Mustapha Tlass (R) and Army Chief of Staff Hassan Turkmani (L) at the unknown soldier-s memorial during a ceremony marking the annual Martyr-s Day, which commemorates rebels executed by the Ottomans during World War I, 06 May 2004. Tlass retired 12 May 2004 as defence minister at the age of 72 after 32 years in the post, a source close to the Syrian government said. The veteran Syrian general, who took office two years after the 1970 coup which brought Hafez al-Assad to power, in which he played a key role, will continue to serve on the ruling Baath party-s command council, the source said.
