FILES-SYRIA-DEFENCE MINISTER
(FILES) -- File photo dated 03 March 2001 shows Syrian Defence Minister Mustapha Tlass smiling after a meeting with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsohatzopoulos in Damascus. The veteran Syrian general retired 12 May 2004 as defence minister at the age of 72 after 32 years in the post, a source close to the Syrian government said. Tlass, who took office two years after the 1970 coup which brought Hafez al-Assad to power, in which he played a key role, will continue to serve on the ruling Baath party-s command council, the source said. Chief of the armed forces staff General Hassan Turkamni has been tipped to succeed Tlass as defence minister. AFP PHOTO/Louai BESHARA
