(FILES) -- This file picture released by the Syrian official news agency SANA 01 August 2002 shows (from L to R) Syrian Defence Minister Mustapha Tlass, President Bashar al-Assad, Army Chief of Staff Hassan Turkmani and Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam attending in Damascus a ceremony marking the 57th anniversary of the creation of the Syrian army. Tlass retired 12 May 2004 as defence minister at the age of 72 after 32 years in the post, a source close to the Syrian government said. The veteran Syrian general, who took office two years after the 1970 coup which brought Hafez al-Assad to power, in which he played a key role, will continue to serve on the ruling Baath party-s command council, the source said.
