Veteran Syrian general Mustapha Tlass retired yesterday as defence minister after 32 years in the post and was replaced by armed forces chief General Turkmani. The appointment of Turkmani, 69, and a native of Aleppo in northern Syria, was announced yesterday in a decree by the Syrian president who also designated a new armed forces chief, General Ali Habib.
