PHILIPPINES-FINANCE-ECONOMY-UN-MIGRANTS-LABOUR
South Korean Joo Bong Hee (R) symbolicaly puts grass and leaves on his mouth as he approaches anti-riot police while he and other protesters try to march towards the venue of the Global Forum on Migration and Development in Manila on October 27, 2008. The protesters critisized the UN-backed forum, where they say would worsen the exploitation of global labour. Meanwhile, experts at the forum said that the number of illegal migrants is expected to spike amid the global financial turmoil, with many seen escaping harsh economic realities at home to work abroad. The number of migrants in the world is now estimated at 40 million, 10 million of whom are illegals and mostly in the United States, where financial institutions and the property sector have crumbled, they said. Joo was symbolicaly asking if migrant workers have to eat grass to survive. AFP PHOTO/JES AZNAR
