INDIA-ELECTIONS-REANG
An Indian woman of the Reang community makes pachra - traditional attire - at a makeshift Reang refugee camp in Gachirampara, some 230 kilometers east of Agartala, capital of India’s northeastern Tripura state on November 11, 2008. The election commission of India has arranged sixteen thousand adult franchise of the refugees in elections to the Mizoram state assembly slated for December 2 next, a stringent decision that upset powerful Mizo social groups always refusing to accept the Reangs as natural residents of the state. Some 32,000 Reangs, also known as Brus, have been languishing in six makeshift camps in the area after they fled ethnic persecution in neighbouring Mizoram state in October 1997.
