GERMANY-EAST-HISTORY-PALAST DER REPUBLIK
A ship makes its way past Berlin's landmark the Cathedral (R) and the remaining concrete pillars of the former east German parliament building (Palast der Republik) on November 17, 2008, at the site where Berlin's Royal Palace used to stand. Badly damaged during the Second World War, levelled by the then communist east German government in 1950, the Royal Palace originally built in the late 17th century, gave way to east Germany's parliament building, the Palast der Republik, which is currently being dismantled. Controversy is raging over the planned reconstruction of the Royal Palace, which many say will be too costly for bankrupt Berlin. AFP PHOTO BARBARA SAX
