The Task Group flagship, the Italian destroyer ITS Durand de la Penne is currently escorting a merchant vessel chartered by the World Food Programme to deliver humanitarian assistance to Somalia. This is the third merchant vessel escorted by the NATO Force since its arrival in the operational area on 24 October. The Operation is conducted in response to a UN request and is aimed at protecting WFP chartered vessels carrying humanitarian aid, and at deterring piracy activities.
