GERMANY-EAST-HISTORY-PALAST DER REPUBLIK

Night view taken on November 27, 2008 shows the deconstruction site of the former east German parliament building (Palast der Republik) with only one remaining concrete pillar being teared down next to Berlin's landmark Cathedral (R) along the river Spree. The dismantling of the building is supposed to be finished on November 28. Badly damaged during the Second World War, levelled by the then communist east German government in 1950, the Royal Palace originally built in the late 17th century, gave way to east Germany's parliament building.
