GERMANY-EAST-HISTORY-PALAST DER REPUBLIK
A photographer takes pictures of the last remainings of the former east German parliament building (Palast der Republik) being teared down on December 2, 2008, at the site where Berlin's Royal Palace used to stand. Damaged during the Second World War, levelled by the then communist east German government in 1950, the Royal Palace originally built in the late 17th century, gave way to east Germany's parliament building, the Palast der Republik, which is currently being dismantled. Controversy is raging over the planned reconstruction of the Royal Palace, which many say will be too costly for bankrupt Berlin. AFP PHOTO BARBARA SAX
