GERMANY-EAST-HISTORY-PALAST DER REPUBLIK
Caterpillars remove the last remainings of the former east German parliament building (Palast der Republik) as Berlin's landmark Cathedral can be seen behind on December 2, 2008. Before, Berlin's Royal Palace, built in the late 17th century, used to stand at this site until it was damaged during the Second World War and levelled by the then communist east German government in 1950, giving way to east Germany's parliament building, the Palast der Republik, now dismantled. Controversy is raging over the planned reconstruction of the Royal Palace, which many say will be too costly for bankrupt Berlin. AFP PHOTO BARBARA SAX
