PERU-ALPACAS-SMUGGLING
A technician of the Agricultural Ministry of Peru, injects into a white alpaca, 18 May 2004 in Lima, an intramuscular microchip for identification, due to the high levels of alpaca smuggling in the Peruvian borders with Bolivia and Chile. Around 3000 animals are annually smuggled into the neighbouring countries for about 150 US dollars, to later be sent to Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland or the Unites States for a prize of five thousand dollars each specimen.
