French President Nicolas Sarkozy gives a press conference after his meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad at the presidential palace in Damascus on January 6, 2009. Sarkozy called on Syria on January 6 to put pressure on its ally Hamas to return to a truce in the Gaza Strip where Israeli forces are carrying out a massive offensive against the Islamists.
