MIDEAST-PALESTINIAN-ISRAEL-RAFAH
Suleiman Khishta, 90, lies slightly wounded on an improvised bed 21 May 2004 in the compound of his destroyed home in the outskirts of the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah in the Brazil neighborhood, where few Israeli tanks and armored vehicles were still in position. Khishta was fast asleep when Israeli bulldozers punched their way into his bedroom, sending the walls tumbling down and trapping him under the rubble of his home on Rafah-s frontline. He miraculously escaped major injury as his sons and grandchildren frantically dug him out, before escaping out of the back of the house in the devastated neighbourhood of this poverty-stricken southern Gaza Strip town. The Israeli army withdrew most of its troops from Rafah, where more than 40 Palestinians have been killed since the start of a devastating raid dubbed "Operation Rainbow" and aimed at stopping arms smuggling from Egypt through cross-border tunnels.
