GERMANY-POLITICS-VOTE-HESSE-EXIT-SPD
Franz Muentefering, party leader of Germany's social democrats (SPD), gives a statement in Berlin after exit polls of the state vote in Hesse, western Germany, were published on January 18, 2009. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative CDU with Hesse's top candidate Roland Koch trounced the centre-left SPD in the vote, exit polls indicated, kicking off a super election year forecast to give her a second term. The SPD suffered a record defeat with just 23.5 percent of the vote, a slump of around 13 points, eight months before Germany holds a general election. AFP PHOTO DDP/MICHELE TANTUSSI GERMANY OUT
