Metropolitan Kirill, acting Russian Orthodox Patriarch and leading candidate for patriarchy, opens the congress to elect a new patriarch at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral on January 27, 2009. Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad was elected patriarch of the Russian Orthodox church Tuesday, succeeding Alexy II who died last month, an election spokesman said on state television. Kirill received 508 votes in a secret ballot of the Church Council in Moscow while his challenger Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk won 169 votes.
