TANZANIA-CRIME-ALBINO-RIGHTS-FEATURE

TO GO WITH AFP STORY; TANZANIA-CRIME-ALBINO-RIGHTS by Jean-Marc Mojon.

Photo taken on January 27,2009 shows Neema Kajanja, 28, moulding a pot from clay at her grandmother's home in Ukerewe where she and two siblings, both albinos, live. Ukerewe , an island on Lake Victoria, near the town of Mwanza, is a safe haven compared to other parts of Tanzania where people with albinism now live in fear for their lives as their body parts limbs, internal organs and even hair grow increasingly sought after to be sold for luck potions by individuals seeking wealth and good fortune in business and professional circles. Albinos in Tanzania are increasingly targeted for their body organs, limbs and even hair to be used in luck potions by individuals seeking wealth and/or good fortune in business and professional circles that has left the more than 170,000 Tanzanians recorded with albinism, in a country of 38 million, living in fear for their lives as discrimination by society and increasing impunity by authorities in handling cases of albino murders get more prominent.
