CORRECTING DATE: A computer-generated artists impression released by the European Space Agency (ESA) depicts an approximation of 12 000 objects in orbit around the Earth. A communications satellite belonging to US company Iridium has collided with a disused Russian military satellite, on February 10, 2009. "A collision has occurred between an Iridium 33 satellite and a Russian Kosmos 2251 military satellite," Russian officials have said. Space News have reported that NASA is tracking hundreds of particles of debris from the collision, and said the orbiting International Space Station faced a small risk of being struck.
